Srila Prabhupada's Mission: Bringing Krishna Consciousness to the World

Updated 8 October 2026

Every temple of the Hare Krishna Movement, including our own center here in Visakhapatnam, stands on the foundation of one man's extraordinary determination — His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

At the age of 69, when most people are winding down their life's work, Srila Prabhupada boarded a cargo ship bound for New York with little more than a few boxes of books, a supply of dry cereal, and unwavering faith in his spiritual master's instruction: to carry the teachings of Krishna consciousness to the Western world. He had no funds, no institutional support, and no certainty of success. What he had was the conviction that the wisdom of the Bhagavad-Gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam was not meant for one culture or one country, but for all of humanity.

Within a few years, that conviction gave rise to the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), founded in 1966. From a small storefront in New York, the movement grew into a worldwide institution with over a hundred temples, spanning six continents — among them, our very own Chaitanya Bhavan here in Gambhiram, Visakhapatnam.

A Mission of Simple Living, High Thinking

Srila Prabhupada often described his mission in the simplest possible terms: to give human society an opportunity for a life of happiness, good health, peace of mind, and all good qualities, through God consciousness. This is not a mission confined to temple walls. It shows up in the food we distribute to those in need, the cows we protect and care for, the kirtans we sing together, and the philosophy classes that help people navigate the questions of daily life with clarity and purpose.

Why This Matters Today

In an age of constant distraction and restlessness, the practical tools Srila Prabhupada shared — chanting, community, service, and study of timeless wisdom — remain remarkably relevant. He didn't ask people to abandon their responsibilities; he taught that any occupation, performed with devotion and awareness of the Supreme, becomes a path to inner peace.

At HKM Visakhapatnam, every festival we celebrate, every plate of prasadam we serve, and every child we teach about Indian culture and values is a continuation of that same mission — one devotee's boundless compassion, still rippling outward across the world today.
