How to Prepare Temple-Style Khichdi Prasadam

At Hare Krishna Movement Visakhapam, Temple-Style Khichdi Prasadam is lovingly prepared every Sunday and offered to Sri Sri Radha Gopinath before being distributed to devotees as prasadam. Prepared with fresh sattvic ingredients, cleanliness, and devotion, this wholesome offering reflects the timeless Vaishnava tradition of cooking for the pleasure of Lord Krishna.

Every step of the preparation is performed in a mood of service, remembering that the food is first meant for the Lord. After being offered with devotion, it becomes Krishna Prasadam—the Lord's divine mercy—which nourishes both the body and the soul. You may also prepare this sacred offering at home by following the traditional temple method described below.

Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

• 2 cups split yellow moong dal
• 1 cup rice
• 4–5 cups water
• 2 tablespoons pure cow's ghee
• 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
• 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger
• 1 chopped tomato
• 1–2 green chilies (optional)
• 1 cup seasonal vegetables (such as carrots, peas, and beans)
• ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
• Salt to taste
• Fresh Tulasi leaves (for offering)

Method of Preparation

Step 1: Wash the Rice and Dal
Wash the rice and split yellow moong dal thoroughly until the water runs clear. Drain the excess water and keep them aside.

Step 2: Prepare the Tempering
Heat the cow's ghee in a clean, heavy-bottomed pot. Add the cumin seeds and allow them to crackle gently. Add the freshly grated ginger and sauté briefly until aromatic.

Step 3: Add the Vegetables
Add the chopped tomato, green chilies, and seasonal vegetables. Cook for 2–3 minutes until the vegetables become slightly tender.

Step 4: Combine the Rice and Dal
Add the washed rice and moong dal to the pot. Stir gently so that they are evenly coated with the ghee and tempered spices.

Step 5: Cook the Khichdi
Pour in the required quantity of water. Add turmeric powder and salt, then stir well. Cover the pot and cook over medium heat until the rice and dal become soft, creamy, and well combined. If required, add a little hot water to achieve the desired consistency.

Step 6: Offer to Lord Krishna
Once the Khichdi is ready, transfer it to a clean offering bowl and place a fresh Tulasi leaf on top. Offer it with love and devotion to Sri Sri Radha Gopinath while reciting prayers or the Hare Krishna Mahamantra. After the Lord accepts the offering, the preparation becomes Krishna Prasadam and may then be respectfully served to family members, guests, and devotees.

"Patraṁ puṣpaṁ phalaṁ toyaṁ

yo me bhaktyā prayacchati

tad ahaṁ bhakty-upahṛtam

aśnāmi prayatātmanaḥ."
— Bhagavad-gītā 9.26

"If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or water, I will gladly accept it."

Preparing and offering food with devotion transforms an ordinary meal into Krishna Prasadam—the Lord's divine mercy. May this traditional Temple-Style Khichdi inspire devotion, purity, and the joy of serving Lord Krishna in every home.

Hare Krishna!
